At the meeting, the Panel continued its deliberation on issues relating to restitution and compensation for sexual assault victims as well as retaliation against individuals who report incidents of sexual assault within the military. In the afternoon, the Panel began its review of the disposition of sexual assault crimes in the military judicial system. The Panel heard from criminologists and experts from the U.S. Department of Justice Bureau of Justice Statistics and the U.S. Sentencing Commission about crime data collection and analysis in various civilian jurisdictions. The Panel was also briefed by leaders from the Department of Defense Sexual Assault and Prevention and Response Office about the sexual assault crime data tracked by its office. There was no public comment.

The JPP held this meeting as part of its congressionally mandated mission to conduct an independent review and assessment of judicial proceedings conducted under the UCMJ involving adult sexual assault and related offenses for the purpose of developing recommendations to improve such proceedings. At its next session on October 9, 2015, the Panel will continue its review of issues related to retaliation against victims of sexual assault crimes and victim restitution and compensation in addition to receiving briefings related to crime data collection. The JPP will continue its work through September 2017 and will provide reports and assessments to the Secretary of Defense and Congress.
